Welcome to the Eastern Medical Center! My name is Teresa Shen, I would like to introduce myself to you, and share with you some of my experiences with eastern medicine! I would be the third generation of Chinese Medicine in my family! Here's how the story begins: Ever since I was 5 years old, I was enthusiastic and fascinated by acupuncture. I used to always get really horrible bloody noses. One day, my father, Dr. Mason Shen [1] very gently inserted the tiniest needle I ever saw in my arm. My bleeding instantly stopped right there. I was amazed beyond belief in what a little poke, in the right place, could do.
Another unpleasant experience that directed my attention to the miracles of acupuncture was my extreme stomach pains. Western diagnosis could find no reason for the torturous pains that I endured almost every day. The pains were so bad I wanted to go to the emergency room. I couldn't move in any direction to make the pain go away. I was about ready to call 911 when my father came to my rescue again with his needles. This time, he put a needle in my toe. In that instant, all of the pains were extinguished.
I was truly inspired by my father and I was determined to learn the secret way of the needle. How is it possible that little pokes in the right places could bring about an amazing relief of pain, release of endorphins, balancing the whole body out, and relaxing a person like a monk in a deep meditative state? After my education in UC Santa Cruz, and graduation from UC Davis, I took my studies further. My formal training in acupuncture began in the ancient Chinese city of Tianjin. Not only was I able to learn a new language there, I had learned Chinese medicine at its best, from the best! This experience was not of only learning the arts, but more importantly immersing myself in the culture which Traditional Chinese Medicine came from. Healthy lifestyles such as drinking green tea, bicycle riding as a mode of transportation, keeping the body warm instead cold, lights out for most during sleeping hours, respecting of the elders, efficiency and economic thinking. There I was able to witness that the Western Hospitals directly practiced Chinese Medicine combined with Western Medicine. I saw how both disciplines could work together and produce even more amazing results in patients. While I was a student practicing at Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I was able to help two Korean girls overcome infertility and bare children. My grandmother, who had diarrhea for months was back to normal after just one treatment! My knowledge of acupuncture has also helped me to cure my stomach pains, These are only some of the testimonials that keep inspiring me to fall in constant awe of this natural healing energy within us all.
Now, I want to extend my love and joy of this medicine to all those that come to my office. Each patient gets careful attention to detail, a thorough examination to determine the root cause of discomfort and a personally catered treatment procedure. My ultimate goal is for everyone to realize the power of the human body to heal itself, and to realize the closer to nature we are, the better our bodies are to us. One day we will all learn to live in nature again, without the reliance of medication.
