Detox from alcohol, drugs, smoking or even sugar is a matter of will. It’s a matter of strength. It’s a matter of emotions. And largely it’s a matter of body chemistry. When people are addicted, there’s an imbalance. It could be from an “addictive personality,” an emotional-based trauma, a means of escape or a physical issue. As a member of the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association, part of my job is helping patients get from addiction through withdrawal symptoms to balance and freedom.
Quite frequently, people come to Eastern Medical Center looking for help with getting off “lifelong” Western medications. Often I hear about symptoms such as sluggishness and tingling in the fingers and toes, which are common side effects of many drugs. Fortunately, acupuncture is a powerful tool for getting off of medications while balancing the body so that it doesn’t “need” the pills to sustain stable health. We can use acupuncture to taper off medications in a safe, gradual way and balance the chemicals in the brain so that the patient doesn’t suffer withdrawl symptoms.
One of the most commonly asked questions about acupuncture is, “What does it treat?” Perhaps a better question is actually, “What doesn’t it treat?” Because Traditional Chinese Medicine is designed to balance the whole body (rather than just subduing a symptom or working in isolation), there are very few illnesses or health disorders beyond the [...]
A common question for those considering acupuncture treatment for the first time is to ask, “How much does acupuncture cost — especially in relation to Western medicine?”
It’s a question that can be answered on a number of different levels. My thoughts immediately go to quality of life for those who aren’t finding relief using our society’s default approach to medicine. In our culture, we pop pills, treat symptoms (rather than root causes) and if things get really bad, have surgery. But if you’re still suffering through daily experiences with pain, low energy, emotional distress or a million other nagging conditions, what’s the cost of that? What do you miss when you’re always sick or weak … or are distracted by pain or symptoms? How many side effects do you have to deal with from prescription mediations before looking for a better way? How much do you have to struggle before you’re worth the cost of a better life? To me, the real “cost” is in not seeking natural and effective treatment methods to have a healthy body and well being.
Recently, a client came to me who struggled with alcohol addiction. After a treatment, I put ear seeds in his ear, which are taped on specific meridian points. I gave him instructions to stimulate them 3-5 times a day by pressing on them gently. After a few days, he happily reported back to me that [...]
Throw out your scales and your diet books! Although it’s not typically thought of as a weight loss treatment, many clients are surprised and delighted to find that acupuncture helps them lose weight. Sometimes this is intentional; they come with that specific goal in mind. Other times, weight loss is a byproduct of their treatment.
Ever since Dr. Oz featured cupping during his popular television show, it has been in higher demand than ever. It’s so exciting to us here at Eastern Medical Center to see cupping get more attention and have more people interested in cupping treatments because it’s such an amazing way to help heal the body of ailments, stimulate weight loss and even improve your looks!
Acupuncture, acupressure and cupping are some of your most powerful tools in keeping toxins going out and nutrients coming in with the proper healthy flow. These treatments activate the body’s healthy energy and entice more toxins to move out. Our acupuncture and acupressure treatments have a lymph drainage function to assist in good flow. When proper flow is restored, any symptoms you’re experiencing will go away. Studies have shown that toxins will actually leave through the acupuncture meridians stimulated during treatment. And anyone who has received acupuncture knows what it feels like to have a point with a lot of blockage stimulated, where the circulation starts moving better. When a more serious lymphatic issue is present, I will work on particular channels such as the spleen and stomach channels to help the body recover.
You always want your body to have a healthy balance of good nutrients coming in and waste going out. Every cell in our body releases metabolic waste products into, and takes up nutrients from, a surrounding solution called the extracellular fluid. Cellular nourishment and efficiency depend on how fast and how completely waste material is removed from this fluid. If energy blockages or blood stagnation prevent those toxins from leaving the system, there’s no room for more good nutrients to enter. And that’s what an unhealthy body feels like.
