Acupuncturist of the Year!

Dr. Mason ShenThe American Association of Oriental Medicine, one of the largest organizations in the United States, proudly presented Mason Shen with the title of Acupuncturist of the Year for the quality and integrity of his commitment to the field of Oriental medicine. This means that he is the best in country!

This Year in Who's Who of Professionals Mason Shen was also voted International Who's Who for the Year. Selection for inclusion in this organization and membership is a testament to the professional, academic and civic achievement of the member.

Over the past 40 years of Dr. Shen's profession in Chinese Medicine, has not only demonstrated that Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine are powerful and effective tools over a large variety of illnesses through treating countless patients, but also has illustrated, through his own experience, that a determined will can overcome any sickness, as severe as a stroke attack. Dr. Shen suffered a serious stroke attack in 1992, but only after a short period of recovery, he has remarkably exerted himself back to the course of his successful career as a doctor and an advocate of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.

Even though he can now function routinely with only the left side of his body, he continues to treat numerous patients at his Acupuncture Center of Pleasanton, and presides over an annual Chinese Medical convention, which vitally engages the development of Chinese Medicine in America.

During Dr. Shen’s Stay at Cornell, President Nixon made his trip to China.

Newspaper clipping with President NixonNixon's visit generated tremendous interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture back in America. At that time, Dr. Shen began doing Acupuncture research at the Acupuncture Institute of New York where he was able to obtain a successful rate in treating patients with numerous diseases.

While continuing his postdoctoral studies in Lipoprotein at the University of California, Berkeley in 1977, Dr. Shen became frustrated by many conflicting results of medical research. For example, in the 1970’s, two completely separate studies were tested. Each study consisted of a major physician of the time, ten-thousand patients, and spanned a five years time period. Both were well-designed double blind studies and appeared to be objective and scientific. However, the results of these two studies indicated that the oral drugs currently being used is no more effective than sugar pills (placebos) in prolonging the lives of heart attack or diabetes patients.

Should the model of science, developed in the 17th century, continue to dominate the western world without input from any other philosophy?

This was what Joseph Needham, a British philosopher, questions in one of his articles. While frustrated about the above conflicting medical results, Dr. Shen was encouraged to understand for himself the questions of medicine. Believing input from Chinese philosophy could produce a positive influence and perhaps a breakthrough in medicine, Dr. Shen decided to pursue the methods and wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

In 1978 he obtained the California Acupuncture License.

As a result, he started his career as a Chinese Medical Doctor and began treating many patients while continuing his research in Berkeley. From 1979 to 1980, he was appointed Research Fellow at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories to research Lipoprotein and Heart Diseases. At that time, his elder brother, Doctor Mitchel Shen was the Vice-Dean of the Chemistry Department of the University of California, Berkeley.

Unfortunately, Doctor Mitchel Shen became very sick and was operated on twice in two weeks at the Kaiser Hospital, Oakland; he passed away during the second operation. After that, Dr. Mason Shen was bewildered and sorrowful. He believed his brother would still be alive had he been given the opportunity to undergo a treatment integrating Chinese and Western Medicine.

Determined to continue his studies in Chinese Medicine, Dr. Shen obtained his Masters Degree at the Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Taiwan. After he returned to America, he started to treat patients in Danville and Livermore while teaching Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine at the San Francisco College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Science, Oakland.

Dr. Shen Strives Ceaselessly to Improve the Awareness and Stature of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine in America.

6th International Congress of Chinese MedicineSince the 1980’s, he has advocated enthusiastically for the legalization of Acupuncture in California, and has always been dedicated to promote Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine to the mainstream America. One can see the gradually increasing interest in acupuncture among Americans today!

Here, a reporter, admiring Dr. Shen's ceaseless energy, asked Dr. Shen "You are already famous and established, with only feet and one hand being functional, why do you still travel all over the Bay Area to treat patients and organize conventions. I heard you sometimes even drive over 100 miles a day?" Dr. Shen, replied "To be honest with you, in the past years, I have personally financed tens of thousands to each convention I organized, but right now, my only goal is to share and develop this wonderful Healing Art of China to people in the West. All I want to do is to live up to my responsibility as a Chinese Medical Physician and an American citizen."
